1990's

Teens of the 90s vs. Teens nowadays

Only a decade apart, striking differences are glaring between these two batches of youth. We can say that the past two decades brought dynamic changes in cultural touchstones, social reactions, career and familial outlooks, as well as world views. In short the teens of the last two decades are pretty much different from what they used to be more than twenty years ago, yet striking differences separate the two “batches.”
The 90’s teens still carry with them some semblance of trust and high regard for adults and people of authority. This is in contrast to the 00s teens who are suspicious of everyone in a position to help. You have to show them that you care over an extended period otherwise they‘ll never believe that you do care. This is due to the fact that the present day youth experience greater autonomy in today’s fast paced world.
Teenagers from the 90s experienced the start of the technological boom, the Internet was starting to get more traffic, cellular phones began to be part of daily commune although they were still mediocre in size and the most of the displays were in black and white. Desktops started to become ubiquitous and hybrid cars were starting to be conceptualized. These are all welcomed changes, as the teen became more hip an sleek. Present day teens are quite the same but they see no negatives in technology and technology symbolizes change. They grew up with one hour photo processing, high speed Internet, PDAs and any new device that hits the market is cool until the next great invention pops up. This is potentially dangerous because they might not realize that these emerging technologies may isolate rather than connect people and diminish their privacy rights as citizens; and reinforce the sense of autonomy to the extent that it destroys family and cultural ties. What I’m trying to say is that teens of the 90s are less exposed to the perils of such rapid boom in technology compared to today’s youth.
Teens of the 90s have a strong sense of personal identity, they knew who they are and stand up for what they believe in. They don’t easily get rattled and jump into the band wagon of what is considered “in and chic” at any given moment. The teens of today revel in all available choices and dabbles in innumerable varieties. Thus, we have amusing hybrid teens whose music reflects one value, their academic dreams another, their friends something else, and their religious belief system yet a different twist. There is so much going on around them that they lose touch about their identity and become confused about their wavering interests.
We are not saying that teens of the 90s are better in all aspects than the teens at the turn of the millennium. We are just trying to drive the point that the environment to the two groups were exposed to are strikingly different. Each day the world becomes increasingly complex and young people today are as complex as the environment that they live in. (By Parentingteens)

The Four Heavenly Kings of Hong Kong

The "Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop", were named in Hong Kong, declaring Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Leon Lai Ming, Andy Lau Tak Wah, and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, the four best male singers throughout the Cantopop community. These 4 men thus dominated music, and coverage in magazines, TV, advertisements and cinema.
The label was invented by TVB in 1991 when they were introduced onto the Cantopop scene. Although some see this as more of a marketing ploy to help boost record sales, many fans embraced these four men and were fiercely loyal to their favorite. Even today The Four Heavenly Kings are still widely known in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong returned to China

At midnight on July 1, 1997, Hong Kong reverts back to Chinese rule in a ceremony attended by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Prince Charles of Wales, Chinese President Jiang Zemin, and U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. A few thousand Hong Kongers protested the turnover, which was otherwise celebratory and peaceful.

In 1839, Britain invaded China to crush opposition to its interference in the country's economic, social, and political affairs. One of Britain's first acts of the war was to occupy Hong Kong, a sparsely inhabited island off the coast of southeast China. In 1841, China ceded the island to the British with the signing of the Convention of Chuenpi, and in 1842 the Treaty of Nanking was signed, formally ending the First Opium War.

Britain's new colony flourished as an East-West trading center and as the commercial gateway and distribution center for southern China. In 1898, Britain was granted an additional 99 years of rule over Hong Kong under the Second Convention of Peking. In September 1984, after years of negotiations, the British and the Chinese signed a formal agreement approving the 1997 turnover of the island in exchange for a Chinese pledge to preserve Hong Kong's capitalist system. On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong was peaceably handed over to China in a ceremony attended by numerous Chinese, British, and international dignitaries. The chief executive under the new Hong Kong government, Tung Chee Hwa, formulated a policy based on the concept of "one country, two systems," thus preserving Hong Kong's role as a principal capitalist center in Asia.

The Loss of the 90's

Although the 1990's did celebrate many amazing things such as great television and an amazing variety of good music, it also moaned its lost for some of the most influential people in history.

Many were taken by shock when the death of Diana, Princess of Wales broke in the year 1997. The princess died due to injuries sustained from paparazzi chase that concluded in a car accident in Paris. This accident also claimed the lives of the princess's boyfriend, Dido Fayed and her driver, Henri Paul. It was found that the accident was cause by  when the driver lost control of the car due to his drunken state at that time.

Although many years later, many still mourn and remember the life of Princess Diana. Her iconic style and her love for her two children, now adults, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry of Wales. Many commemorate her passing by remembering that fateful day and paying respect to her life.

In that same year, just 5 days after the death of the Princess of Wales, Mother Teresa passed away. This extraordinary woman was known for her life that she had dedicated to taking care of the poor in the poorest places in Calcutta, India. She was the Founder of the Missionaries of Charity, a foundation that acts as a medical sanctuary for those suffering from HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. Besides that, it also offered services for children and family counseling programmes, soup kitchens, schools and ophanages. She passed away due to many medical problems that she had suffered in the years before. Her work in India had made her a recipient for many honours including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Mother Teresa's life now lives in the walls of museums and also in her foundation which has now branched out to many parts of the world. Mother Theresa's life has been an example to many to help other who are less fortunate that we are.
